Concept
We wanted to create a game where it wasn't the standard cliché of the "Good Guy" saving the world. So instead, we made the humans the "Bad Guy" with the intent to destroy the land that you and your family hold dear.
You play as an Orc defending your castle against the constant onslaught of oncomming humans. All you have to defend yourself is a mortar.
Using a One-Button mechanic, we created an intensive and fun game that is easy to pick up and play. By having the humans spawn at random, the player has to account for firing on different halves of the screen in quick succession to avoid losing.
Inspiration
Lisa drew inspiration from various sources on both character design and art style. We went forward with a cell-shaded art style that captured the cartoony feel of the game.
As a group, we wanted to have a top-down look, but still be able to show detail on the characters.
Mechanics
For this project, we were constrained to use a single button for input. Josh and I decided that if we went with the use of the mouse or touch screen input, we could impliment different effects of a single input by the length of time the input is used.
Using this, we designed the game that if you held down the mouse/tap and hold, the Orc would stop moving and you would start the "Aiming Phase" of play. Then when you released, it would fire the cannonball and you would continue moving from side to side before you made an input. We also played with the idea that you can reverse the movement of the Orc by double clicking/tapping.
You win by surviving the onslaught of the humans, but fail when enough get through to break down your castle.
